The College List
Assess, select, and refine
This is the beginning of the blueprint. Students complete an assessment to discern the features of their ideal college(s) and create a balanced list.
Creating the Essay
Brainstorm, organize, write
The college essay is the perfect place to share strengths, stories, hopes, and accomplishments. It's an interview on paper. A story and a glimpse. Students will brainstorm and organize.
The Common App
Complete the actual application
Section by section, page by page, we discuss the application.
Supplementals & Activities
Expand, explain, illustrate
The activity list and "Why Us" essays are both small, ancillary components of the application. Small but powerful. Here, students can describe their accomplishments and strengths.
Q and A, Editing the Essay
Brainstorm, organize, write
Students can schedule a Q and A meeting to manage details and deadlines. Students can also schedule additional meetings to further discuss and refine the college essay and supplements.
Ann's
Story
Ann’s father worked for a large Big 10 university where she spent her childhood Saturdays exploring the campus and all of the possibilities that a college holds. It’s no wonder she became an English teacher (AP Language and Composition) and tried to inspire her students to find their own possibilities through writing. Working with students on the college essay eventually brought her to academic advising. She has worked in both public and private high schools as a college counselor while consulting clients from across the country.

In an effort to learn about helping students become ready for college, Ann became certified at the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions, the Stanford Admissions Symposium, completed the UCLA College Counseling Certificate Program, and the Columbia University Teachers’ College Advising Program.

Ann has worked as an application reader for the University of California-Berkeley (twice) and the University of San Francisco where she read 1200 applications per season. She has evaluated scholarship essays for various foundations including the UCLA True Bruin Alumni Scholarship and has presented her college readiness programs at state counselor conferences.

In addition to spending time at our Michigan colleges, Ann has attended invitational conferences on admissions at several campuses including Amherst, Babson, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Dayton, Furman, Harvard, High Point, Mt. Holyoke, Olin College of Engineering, Smith, Stanford, Wellesley, the University of Alabama, the University of California-Irvine, UC-Berkeley, the University of Miami, the University of Tampa, and Vanderbilt.

She is one of just 27 National Board Certified Teachers of English in the state of Michigan, which is the highest level of endorsement a teacher can earn after a competitive, comprehensive application process. Ann was the inaugural recipient of the Joyce Ivy College Counselor of the Year award, whose selection committee consists of admissions representatives and high school students. She holds a Masters degree from Regis University and earned her secondary English teaching degree from Western Michigan University.
Ann is a member of HECA, IECA, and MACAC. Both HECA and IECA certify their members and hold them to strict levels of ethics and achievement. It is the highest level of credentialing in this field.
